Student Volunteer Opportunity

We are seeking students interested in international relations to volunteer with The Sage Institute for Foreign Affairs, a Richmond-based nonprofit dedicated to enhancing global affairs literacy. Our work involves making expert insights accessible to diplomats, journalists, and other professionals as well as fostering communities of foreign affairs experts.

Volunteers will contribute to a variety of projects:

  • Think Tank Database Project: Build a comprehensive database of global think tank experts to aid diplomats, journalists, and policymakers.

  • Bilateral Maps Project: Gather and map data on global bilateral relations. You can choose specific countries to focus on.

  • Global Stories Project: Help curate content that highlights the geopolitical underpinnings of foreign policy.

Our volunteer roles are predominantly virtual, offering significant flexibility. Volunteers set their own hours, committing to anywhere from one to ten hours per week, with a minimum commitment of 20 hours over time. These hours may be recognized as volunteer contributions at participating schools.

Join us to help bring clarity to complex global issues and gain valuable experience in the field of international relations. Your efforts will directly support the work of diplomats, journalists, and policymakers around the world.

School Credit

Volunteer hours may be recognized for school credit at participating schools.

Foreign Policy Professionals

The Sage Institute for Foreign Affairs has been built on diverse contributions of experts across the fields of political analysis, diplomacy, journalism, education, and technology. Our projects range from creating detailed maps of bilateral relations and comprehensive country resource guides to developing an expert database and unveiling the complexities of foreign policy through our Global Stories project.

We often establish committees to explore the best ways to develop and deliver our content so that it is most useful for diplomats, journalists, and foreign policy professionals. If you have expertise in geography, international relations, information organization, content strategy, or editorial work and are interested in contributing, we’d like to hear from you.

We welcome those willing to volunteer their time to ideate and help drive our projects forward, but when it comes to content creation, we remain committed to compensating experts - with rare exception. If interested in getting involved, please reach out to us.
